A 36-year-old Kearney man, Remberto Marroquin Jr., is being held on a $1 million bond after authorities say he chased a vehicle containing his ex-girlfriend and opened fire.

According to the Kearney Police Department, the incident began early Saturday morning when a 26-year-old woman called 911 claiming that her ex-boyfriend was pursuing her in a vehicle while firing a gun. She was riding as a passenger, and a different man was driving the vehicle.

The driver, after being shot, steered the car directly to the Kearney/Buffalo County Law Enforcement Center, where officers met them. The driver was found to have a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to a local hospital; his injury was described as non-life-threatening. The woman was unharmed.

The suspect, Marroquin Jr., fled the scene after the shooting but was located later that morning. Law-enforcement agencies including the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol, along with the Kearney Police Department, converged near the 400-block of East 8th Street in South Kearney. At about 11:30 a.m., he was taken into custody without incident.

Marroquin Jr. has been formally charged with first-degree assault (a Class II felony), use of a firearm to commit a felony (Class 1C), and unlawful discharge of a firearm (Class 1D). His bond was set at 10% of $1 million. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 14, 2026. He is ordered to have no contact with the alleged victims or their residence and must not possess firearms.

Investigators said the shooting began near the 1100 block of West 21st Street. The vehicle pursued by Marroquin Jr. continued eastbound on 21st Street, crossing 2nd Avenue on the way to the law-enforcement center. Multiple shots were reported fired during the chase.

As of now, police say there is no ongoing danger to the public, and they have asked residents in the area to check their property for possible stray-bullet damage. Anyone with information or video footage related to the incident is asked to contact KPD or Buffalo County CrimeStoppers.
