The National Weather Service in North Platte has issued a High Wind Watch for northern Nebraska beginning late Monday night and continuing through Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters say a strong cold front will move through the region overnight Monday, bringing powerful northwesterly winds that could gust as high as 60 miles per hour.

The strongest winds are expected between midnight and 6 p.m. Tuesday, with conditions likely to be hazardous for anyone traveling—particularly high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and vehicles towing trailers. Gusty crosswinds may make some stretches of highway difficult to navigate, and drivers are urged to slow down and use caution.

Residents should secure or bring inside any outdoor items that could be blown around, including trash bins, decorations, and lightweight equipment. Forecasters note that unsecured objects may easily become airborne in winds of this strength.

The front will also usher in much colder air across the region, with temperatures dropping sharply behind the system. Winds are expected to gradually diminish Tuesday evening.
